about

The piece Syrsorna kallar (The crickets are calling) was commissioned in 2006 by textile artist Gunwor Nordström for a retrospective exhibition of her œuvre 1972-2005 at the Textile Museum in Borås, Sweden.

The lion's share of the sounds heard in the piece stems from a French cassette tape containing audio examples of endemic crickets. I started by listening carefully to the cassette and selecting parts and bits which I considered useful. Those parts were digitised and stored on a hard drive. They were then edited and manipulated electronically, in order to make them more musically pleasing, and also to conform to my vision of the final result. The processed audio clips were then mixed, combined and arranged harmonically and sequentially (with the addition of an extra synthesizer here and there).

I only recently rediscovered what most likely was the only copy of the work; a homeburned CD with the title handwritten on it. When I first listened to it, it was both fascinating and pleasing to once more experience this all but forgotten music. So, with great pleasure and great pride I introduce to you: my little cricket friends from France! After 14 years of silence, their songs can now be heard again.
